Diagnostics for monitoring AIDS in resource-limited settings
HIV-1/AIDS has become a pandemic since it was first reported in 1981, afflicting an
enormous economic burden on developing countries and posing a great health threat to the
world. Although antiretroviral treatment (ART) cannot cure HIV-1/AIDS, it remains to be the
most effective method to decrease AIDS-related mortality. However, successful treatment
needs closely monitoring of immunological and virological responses within AIDS patients. In
the developed world, CD4+ cell count and viral load assays are extensively used for ART
monitoring, whereas clinical manifestations are mainly used in the developing world. Given
the wide accessibility of cheap ART drugs in resource-limited settings, there is an urgent
need for affordable, rapid, and simple diagnostics for ART monitoring. In this presentation,
I would like to talk about the state-of-the-art technologies used to develop monitoring
tools in resource-limited settings.
